ID request - large glass bowl, maybe Czech?
« on: August 27, 2020, 05:53:04 PM »
Hello :) This is my first post here, so apologies in advance if I get anything wrong or leave something out... I was wondering if anyone could help id this very large glass bowl I recently acquired.  The color is mainly red but also with some green around the base.  Dimensions are 22 inches wide x 11 inches depth x 8.5 inches high.  Weight is very roughly 3kg I think, although the scales I used weren't the best... The base is ground flat and has a fair amount of wear on it so I wouldn't say it was particularly new, but wouldn't want to guess its age beyond that.

Any ideas?  I've seen Chribska bowls online with similar elongated shapes, but nothing that quite matches this one.

Looks more like Murano to me than Czech, with that star shaped base. I've had / sold quite a few similar shaped bowls, occasionally they have a generic Murano label. I doubt you will be able to find out the factory but fingers crossed.

Also if you have access to a UV light, give it a zap, the green layer looks like uranium to me.

The colour and shape also remind me of Chalet Glass?

Yeah could be Chalet I suppose. I've never handled any Chalet glass, I don't seem to come across it here in the UK, but from pictures I've seen, the pulled out bits always seem quite a bit longer and thinner than the Murano versions. I just get a Murano vibe from this one, could be wrong though!

I think you'd have a better gut feel than me as I only one large heavy Murano piece and never handled any Chalet  :)

Thanks both :)  Started looking online for similar Murano bowls as I think my searching had been a bit too narrow before.  Came across this one, which is described as 50s Murano.  It seems to be a similar design (the pointed sides aren't quite the same), and also quite a bit smaller:

I'm assuming the pricing on that site is a little on the optimistic side though!

The uranium glass suggestion is interesting; never even considered that.  I don't have a UV light currently, but I looked on eBay and saw that they cost hardly anything these days.  Also have another use that I could put one too... so have now ordered one.  Will let you know my findings when it turns up :)

:) My first thoughts were Chalet, the shape looked right, but I haven't seen Chalet with Uranium in. The green glow I saw made me keep quiet as I couldn't add anything to what Wayne had said, that indicated Murano to me too, and I know he knows more about this area than I do.  ;)

The one on the Pamono site looks as if it has Uranium in - and I'm afraid the price tag is a bit optimistic, yes. ;D
Cheers, Sue M. (she/her)

One with the star shaped base in green & amber and another with the remains of a label which reads Cristallo Venezia, few more examples online if you search.

I've never heard of Cristallo Venezia before, but a quick search revealed several designs I recognise, with handy labels for ID, thanks John!
