Yellow Satin Glass Jug ID Help
« on: November 20, 2020, 04:09:51 PM »
Hello, I recently got this in a lot at auction. It was in the same lot as this one...
https://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,70224.0.html

So may have come from the same home or be from the same era.  It's approx 17cm tall and looks quite old to me. Any ideas of maker or era would be much appreciated :)

This has very much the look of Lafiore Glass, Mallorca. Fairly recent. No relation in time or space to your other vase.  ;)

It shares the same sort of Roman inspired design but not sure it is from Lafiore, on the other hand no useful suggestions...

John

I couldn't find this exact shape in Lafiore, but very similar wiggly handles and strapping around the top, and the sandy textured finish pointed me there. But like you John, I am not positive, given I couldn't find the exact thing. :)

The texture itself is smooth but the glass is frosted. It does remind me somewhat of Roman :)

So after having this vase for 6 months I just noticed marking on the base!!  ::)

It looks like "TOSI 1643 CCAA 1975" to me - does this mean anything to anyone? :)

There is a well known glassmaking family of Tosi in Murano.
However I'm not convinced that's Tosi at the beginning of that long number, it could be the start of the number as the 's' looks more like a 5 and 'o' could be a zero etc. If we could verify the 'T' better it would help, but I can't see it from the photo.
Also how is the pontil mark finished? It looks a little rough/uneven from the photo.

I read your TOSI as 8051...

Thank you for your replies - I was unsure about the T too. I came to it because I don't think the "I" is a 1 because it's different to the way they've written the other 1s. I'll upload a close up of that part...

The pontil has been smoothed, those lighter parts are smooth too but seem to bee an internal crack. It is a bit uneven though.
