Polish glass would be highly unlikely to have a roughly ground pontil mark, I would think.

yes agree -  I've thought that since my first assumption.

It was bought by a non-glassie friend so assume it is a 'decorator store' range and probably made in China.  It's really nicely made apart from the ground pontil and one of my favourite pieces :)

I have a beautiful contemporary Chinese paperweight.  ;D
It was a birthday present from my friend - and it was something I asked for when she was desperate for suggestions. Heart Foundation. I'm sure one of my wonderful glass wastepaper buckets is Chinese too.
