Topic: Big Somersso Red Cylinder Vase Red/Clear

Got a nice piece of glass today it is a big piece with good weight lots of wear to the outside of the
pontil scar also, When i took the base picture i got some yellow colors coming out in the pictures not
to sure why this happened but maybe from glare? The vase measures nearly 10" x 5" wide and heavy.
Would love to know any ideas on where it might be made? Thank you

is this not just a red vase cased in clear?  I thought it was normal for red glass to be cased in clear as otherwise the red appears too dark and/or it's too expensive to use as an uncased colour?
And is this what is known as 'sommerso'?

I have some Stevens and Williams glass from c.1930s that has this curious yellow orangey colour to the clear, not obvious until you start looking closely at an angle.

Yes you are right m, sommerso is a colour covered or cased in another colour, not clear.

Sommerso is submerged; there is no submerged effect here, so just cased

Regarding yellow/ greenish? color manifesting in red glass cased in clear.
  I have 3 pieces of gold ruby cased in clear lead glass that shows this effect in a very obvious and quite striking manner.This curious effect as been a mild obsession of mine lately. I will post some photos in a separate thread.

The yellow/green may possibly be from the manganese added to the clear glass to get rid of a green tinge caused by iron oxide. Under UV light it fluoresces faintly green, especially in the thicker parts of the glass. As your photo was on a window sill the UV in natural sunlight might have caused the same effect.

The idea of natural UV filtering in the glass is interesting. For the most part the lighting in the photo is incandescent. Although this effect can be seen just as well in sunlight.

cagney, I should have made it clear I was referring to LEGSY's vase which was pictured on a window sill in natural light. I think the colour in your pieces comes from something else.

I think LEGSY should conduct an experiment with his vase. The color is very similar. Still somewhat obsessed.
