Uranium Glass Lampshade.
« on: May 24, 2021, 09:16:53 AM »
This is a huge 40cm. wide lampshade with what appear to be original metal fittings and it was a nice surprise to find it was Uranium glass. I think it's definitely French and probably by Clichy but I can't be sure. I've now got to work out how I'm going to fit it to the ceiling  ;D.

What a thrill.  :o
It's a seriously substantial ceiling plafont!  ;D

Yes Sue, I've just checked and it weighs 5.75 lbs/ 2.6kgs. I've searched again and the squiggly (technical term) pattern is also similar to some Schneider pieces I've seen.

I agree, it does look very, very French. 8)
And to have all the chrome fittings; and it to be Uranium on top, just for you; it's an incredible find. (I do go on ceiling plafont hunts.)
I can't be doing with modern things that don't function as attractive objects to cover up the ugly bulb and diffuse the light it emits.

The pattern in it reminds me of '50s Royal Brierley.   ;)
I'm not nearly as up on French makers as I'd like to be. :-[

I only know what I've found researching some smaller shades I have and a lot were made in France.

can you link to the similar Schneider pieces ?
I have a bowl that I think is quite typical but it doesn't look like this effect.  Might be a different decor effect though.

Link here says 'no Clichy paperweights are known to have been created by Clichy after 1870 when they were supposedly taken over by Sevres'
I can't remember the Clichy timeline but I did wonder if this lampshade might have been produced outside of their operational period?

Flying free, this is the closest piece I can find although there are a few more on line with a similar decoration.

There are also a lot of lampshades on line attributed to Clichy, I've actually just found this one searching under "abat-jour verre" which perhaps confirms mine to be Clichy

I can't find much detail about this "Clichy" apart from it is perhaps a generic term for glass made in the Clichy area of Paris, a bit like Biot covers several factories, perhaps one of our French members can help. The general opinion is it's from around the 1930's and here are photos of two other shades I have from the same period.

Now fitted to the ceiling, lucky there was a joist by the ceiling rose and lucky I'm not tall  ;D. I cleaned the chrome back to the brass as it was badly corroded, but it could easily be re-chromed.
