Odd looking bottle type object with a Vogel label.
« on: May 26, 2021, 03:27:06 PM »
Any ideas what on earth this might be please?  It looks as though it is meant to be hung.  There is some blue residue inside but not sure what this is or what it was used for.
The label is plastic with what looks like a bird in flight.
TIA ;)

isn't Vogel the German word for bird?  And might it be a bird- feeder (water)?

A search for Vogel glass factory led to this, the Goethe Barometer. There is information online as to how it works. I'd not heard of it and at first thought it might be a fire extinguisher. "Vogel" is German for bird.

Fantastic!  I would never gave guessed!
So its a Goethe Barometer which needs to be filled with coloured water and that now explains the blue residue inside :D
I think I'll pass this one on to my daughter who is a keen gardener as she might find it more useful (and fun) and I know she'll be fascinated by the science.
Thanks folks :-*

This type of barometer used to be a signature product at Skrufs glasbruk, Sweden.
They named it a "pee barometer" (when air pressure sank, it could "pee"), also "thunder barometer".

I love the alternative names for it ;D
Thanks for the additional information. I'll certainly pass it on to my daughter who now owns it.

:) If she can get it sort of calibrated, it can be a very useful source of info about the weather just about to come.
It can tell you if it's safe to hang the washing out and go off and leave it, or whether you'll need a brolly when you go out.
I still use my Grandpa's battered old barograph.  8)

She's quite excited about using it and it will certainly be useful.  I remember a time when wooden framed barometers use to grace the walls of peoples porches/hallways, but they had something red or blue in the narrow glass tube.  I know she will enjoy explaining to her young two school age girls the science involved 8).  I was told in the past that if you place one of these in a large plastic bag which has been inflated, then press down, you can tell if it works or not.   ;)

It does work.  8)
I'm afraid, given you and I live a fair distance apart, my readings from Grandpa's wouldn't be much use for your calibration.
It's way up right now - about 1030. Clear blue skies and sunshine.  ;D
