6 inches tall with this one, shear mark to base and what maybe a gadget mark to the top of the foot, inscribed ... D.Bevral ,  Spelter Works 1886, no chance of finding which spelter works that would have been

What a really lovely find - posh ptherthphtherosomething.
Fern glass to normal folk. 
But a particularly wonderful and interesting example.
Is the base of the glass flat? It looks to almost have corners! 

Possibly a daft question. 
In the first pic, I can see the top of the foot.
Where is the gadget mark? I don't know what to look for. Can you describe the position for me using the clockface convention, pretty please?

Hello Sue, almost flat, got a few wrinkles, probably not the best example to show the gadget mark, this one is better, it's a bit like the top of the foot has been impressed with a small horse shoe , does this help, I might have a better example somewhere

If I knew which bit to be staring at, it would help me a lot. 
Is it the triangular bit at about ten past the hour?
And about quarter past, on the first pic?

the Victorian's obsession with pteridomania, as Christine once said - though when I punched that into the Board's search nothing came up.             Silber & Fleming is full of small and large glass paned containers in which they grew their ferns.                  Your description of a horse shoe shape is v.g. Keith, and it occurs to me that the textured surface area outside of that might be the result of the asbestos string??
How about using a black felt tip on the foot, to outline the gadget mark area, then posting the picture.

Does this help, the gadget is a wooden contraption that holds the foot while the glass is being finished, there's a picture in Hajdamach's book I believe.

thanks Keith  -  yes, that's a v.g. outline showing how the contraption left an impression on the foot of the glass.        You might check again, but have a feeling that both Wilkinson and Hajdamach show metal gadgets.

a very big thanks for locating that thread  -  seems a long time ago, thought I do remember being very chuffed at finding an example and even happier at getting a good clear shot with the camera.
And to have praise from Christine and Peter must have made my day.         I do in fact still have that glass though the black felt tip has mostly worn away.          thanks again.
