Jobling? not Davidson Jade Glass Grapefruit Dish.
« on: October 26, 2021, 10:46:45 AM »
This is the dish from the 247 1/2 set which came with a plate, although it's not listed in the link below. In the rarer jade green uranium glass when held up to the light it has streaks like cloud glass, not unusual apparently. It is 3 3/8" high and 4 3/4" diameter and is from mid 1930's.

From the colour this looks more like Jobling than Davidson. I believe both firms made this shape, though I’ve yet to find documentary proof. Anyway, I had a couple like this in a very Jobling-y jade which came with a pair of small 1054 plates. The contrast with the Davidson version was quite striking with the Davidson examples being much deeper in shade and in a cooler colour overall. Davidson jade also does not typically contain uranium.

Thankyou Steven you are right of course, I should have read the link I gave right through  ::). I think my dish would be better described as "opaline" rather than jade and I'll have to do a bit more research into the Jobling connection. Mods could you please alter the title to this post, thanks.

attractive find, whoever made it.        However, I'd plump more for simply a dessert dish in view of the lack of upturned foot which is usually the hallmark of a grapefruit dish. :)

I called it a grapefruit dish because Davidson sold it with a plate and called it a "Grape Fruit Set" and the shallow bowl makes me think it was for grapefruit.

yes, it's true you need somewhere to sling the pips  -  and then again, what happens if you eat grapefruit from a tin ;D

Or better still don't eat grapefruit  ;D I'm not actually sure about the Jobling attribution so more investigation needed.

This was one of mine that came with the 1054 plates: https://www.yobunny.org.uk/glassgallery/displayimage.php?pos=-4626 Camera doesn’t show the colour accurately here, but it was an exact match to the plates and to several other jade pieces from my Jobling collection. Haven’t seen a catalogue reference for the pattern though. S. Reich & co. also made a very similar uranium jade glass.

Taking a long shot on this one Steven  -  in the Baker & Crowe Tyne & Wear Museums Catalogue - p. 16 - lower right picture, lower shelf  - there is a very similar 'grapefruit with under plate' type design.        Might this be the the Jobling item being discussed, though appreciate the colouring is impossible to determine since the picture is in b. & w.

Thanks Steven, I'm not sure the colour of mine matches it, mine seems to be more uneven and translucent, I haven't got any Jobling pieces to compare it to. I did check the Reich catalogues because I've a trinket pot of theirs with a very similar colour and cloud glass like wisps, but no luck. I did also think it may be French as they made a lot of this type of glass.
