Any ID for this vase please? Could it be Scottish?
« on: October 28, 2021, 04:44:21 PM »
Hello all, a rather attractive vase, I have a feeling that it could be one of the Scottish makers but am not sure. There's no signature. It as a very mild iridescence throughout. Flat on the bottom with no pontil. Height is around 9 inches. Any help, as always, will be greatly appreciated.

Looking through the pages on here I came across the link to Monart glass and looking through the catalogues on their website I saw a pic from their 1920s catalogue with vase number 5 bearing an uncanny resemblance to my vase (the shape is right). Trouble is the pics are in black and white and it is hard to distinguish the texture of the vase. Anyone who knows their Monart/Vasart/Ysart care to comment?

I am no Monart expert. Saying that, I have had enough through my hands to say no. The base is plain wrong, can't suggest where to look for the right maker, sorry.

John

What to expect from a Monart bases:

Hi John,
Thank you for your input and help.
I clicked on the links you popped on your message above and the 2nd link with base pics did show a promising pic...base number 7 (just plain and flat). Trust me to have yet another item that is not as straight forward as I'd like.

Just adding my support to John's not Scottish or Ysart.
The glass itself just isn't right.
You have a mystery. I'd be looking towards eastern Europe, perhaps even the maker of what Frank used to call cellophane glass. You should find examples of that illustrated on the Ysart site as not being Ysart.  :)

Number 7 looks ground and polished flat, this looks moulded. Does it have a satin finish?

I have a wee Monart bowl with a flat polised base containing a round polished mark.

The flat polished part is completely circular, there is a definite edge to it where it curves into the sides. It can be seen in the first two pics, but shows more as a line on the photos.

Hello folks, sorry for the delay in replying. Thank you for the not Ysart link. I can't see anything that really resembles and you are right, I have a mystery. The thing with my vase is that it is well made...it has a good quality feel about it...just a nice piece. Yes, it does have a satin base. It is the same as the body of the vase.

Thank you Nev,
I've ad a look at some images and there are a lot of pieces that have the same texture but of course, there isn't one that is the same shape as mine but I'll do some more research on Schneider. Thanks again.
