Orange glass jug with frosted handle. Any ID please?
« on: December 11, 2021, 07:53:34 PM »
Hello all.
Can anyone ID this jug for me please or know the country of origin?
It is frosted - the handle is clear but has a frosted finish, likewise the orange part. The base is flat with no pontil. It could well be Italian. There is no spout, just the diagonal cut. Height is 8.5 inches. Thank you for any help, as always.

Is the rim cut? or rounded?

It looks as though you can see a teeny bit of clear glass at the rim but the photos are too grainy to tell any details unfortunately.

I ask because I have an orange jug in a more traditional jug shape than this also showing what looks like that teeny bit of clear glass at the very edge of the rim.  Mine has a bulbous base and then neck so not as stylised as yours but the handle is the same also in the clear satin finish as is the body and I think the colour.  It was bought in Heals 20/21 years ago as a present.  I presumed made in Poland I think?  It's quite heavy for size - size is what I'd call a water jug or lemonade jug type thing.

Another of these jugs plus some random other items. Carlo Moretti was successful with similar and will have been imitated, not that they were the first company to give glass a satin finish. My guess for these jugs with the slanting top is Empoli - such a wide 'umbrella' can easily be seen as a little bit of a cop out.... Although my file names include Moretti that indicates some wishful thinking on my part.

A group photo with some Moretti vases and the orange decanter for comparison. In contrast I am fairly certain that this blue decanter with clear stopper was made by Moretti.

Nice pics :)

I've just checked my jug.  Not as 'stylish' as it's just a fat bulbous jug shape - nice shape though not boring somehow (not quite as stylish as a Schneider lemonade jug but still nice enough for me to put it on display).   Orange with the clear handle all satin glass.
It looks as though it's been made in the same way with a polished rim and that faint clear bit showing around the rim (rather than a cut rim) and it's the same colour.  However on the base, difficult to see but can be easily felt, it definitely has a polished pontil mark that has been satinated over.  The surface satin over the whole piece including the base is very very smooth.

All I know it was definitely bought in Heals 20/21 years ago.

Thank you both for your help. That 1st jug is identical to mine and in reply to the question regarding the rim...it is rounded rather than flat cut and there is that clear, very thin line around the rim. That larger/tall jug in the pics is magnificent...what a beautiful piece of glass. I had an idea it was Italian and possibly Empoli. Again, than you for your help and input.

Polish, not really considered that, I remember seeing some sommerso vases with a heavily satinated finish, pretty sure they were Polish. Plenty of satin Tarnowiec to be found as well, both large and small items. There is this with a Krosno label too:

ooh I had that vase in blue !  that one not a present though but I think that came from Heals also - used to do a lot of shopping there as worked around the corner.
