Fine French? crystal perfume bottle
« on: July 25, 2022, 11:49:14 AM »
This perfume bottle is high quality cut crystal, very crisp, heavy for its size. The shape reminds me of the base of the Eiffel Tower in Paris. Thus I am guessing at French manufacture. I bought this PB along with a Baccarat Narcisse Noir bottle by Parfums Caron. They came from the same collection.

Some details: citrine-coloured bottle, clear stopper. Base 6.3 cm square, with four cut out feet. 5.4 cm high to the top of the neck. Neck straight, with a turned over rim. Stopper a faceted globe in clear glass, 4.5 cm long, 2.2 cm diameter top.

It's in almost perfect condition. There are no maker's marks or other signatures.

Any ideas as to the maker and when it was made? Thanks for your help.

Anton

With citrine I tend to think Czech first.  Sorry but that stopper is not original (wrong colour and the cutting does not match).

I should have said that it is 'flashed' citrine, just on the surface. I think the stopper is absolutely correct for this bottle. The style of the stopper, a globe with triangular facets, is often seen on Baccarat and St Louis bottles, for example, from the late 19th and early 20th Century, and the style of stopper usually has no similarity to the design on the bottle.

Flashing is done before cutting...

So how are the cuts still citrine?

It looks very like many of the cut PBs in Forsythe's "Made in Czeckoslovakia".
It should have a very tall and fancy stopper.
The one bottle than seems to match best is hard to make out from the photo, it is amethyst and I can't see how it is cut (it is number 208 on p27)
The stopper on that bottle is a tall clear frosted oval with a cameo on, decorated all around.

The stopper currently in it does not fit properly. I can see a bit of the ground part sticking out above the neck space. It also looks new, it looks the wrong colour and it doesn't go with the bottle base at all.
Cheers, Sue M. (she/her)

The cuts are not citrine, but clear through the flashing. It's difficult to show in the photos, but if you look at the oblong panels, for example,  they are clear. In my opinion, the stopper is correct for this bottle and typically French, but I can see why Czech is suggested. I will follow that up with more research. Thanks to all for your input.

I wonder if VSL might be a contender although possibly it would be marked perhaps?
They were very fond of clear with overlay colour and then cutting.

There is a box here with a clear lid.  I'm not suggesting your stopper is correct because I don't know if it is, and it doesn't 'feel' or look right to me, but just thinking they seemed to work a lot with coloured and clear in a piece and if yours has clear panels then that might fit with their work.

Caveat - I don't know much at all about VSL and therefore don't know if this colour citrine is one of their colours nor if that cutting is typical of their work.  It just feels like it should be under consideration just in case.

As ever, Sue's instincts are proving correct. The stopper is slightly proud of the bottle and a little wobbly! Therefore, the bottle and stopper seem to be a marriage, despite my initial thoughts. The bottle suggests Czech and the stopper French. A bit disappointing since it's devalued. Never mind. It's a learning experience.  ;D
