Allenburys Food Measure.
« on: January 17, 2023, 02:10:19 PM »
Nothing special glass wise but I thought it was interesting. Produced for the Allen and Hanburys company who sold pharmaceutical products and baby food under the Allenburys name, based in Ware and Bethnal Green. It might have been made by a London company or I'd guess possibly Jobling or Davidson.

Hi Nev. I like these old, quirky kitchen items. Recently found this small (7cm tall) Sowerby measure.
Pattern number 1471, pg35 1885 pattern book. Also in 1912 pattern book, so it was produced for a number of years.

I love these useful items, I had one of the wee measures like Nev's in reply #2 but can't find it now sadly, mine had the lettering in red enamel.
Cheers! Anne, da tekniqual wizzerd

Just found another Sowerby measure. Pattern number 1470, pg35 1885 pattern book. Made in four sizes.
This one is 3.5" (9cm) tall, so may be the smaller of the four.
One side is graduated 1,2,4,6,8 and marked f3.
The other side is marked 1/2, 1 and marked f3, but the 3 has the top line repeated, see picture. Very odd.
This was done in the mould so must have been intentional.
Anyone know what these marks mean, or what the measure was used for?

Fluid ounces? So maybe a variation long the lines of F oz.

John

Here's a better picture.
I will try some measurements, if I can find another measure in fluid ounces.
