ID Request : Lobed Green - Orange Ashtray Bowl (Very Heavy)
« on: February 02, 2023, 08:39:42 AM »
Any help appreciated on working out this smallish - but very heavy, can't weight it - bowl that has three ashtray indents that appear as handmade as the rest of it, but aren't clearly defined enough that it couldn't also be used or displayed as a bowl or ornament.

It's green at the base, orange towards the top. It's lobed, with 8 sticky out bit around it's circumference.

Width : 13cm (Across Top) + 9cm (Across base)
Height : 10cm

... I can't find anything specifically like it. Google lens threw up nothing certain. In style, somehow more like czech glass ... perhaps it's Sklo Union / Chribska?

Could well be Chribska but I could not find this exact shape in a catalogue, the other main contender is Egermann and in this case possibly a better bet. They seem to have made access to their catalogue on their website subscription only, sadly.

I would widen your search to Japanese glass as well as Czech.

Nothing very specific..Hineri, Sanyu, Iwatsu..that kind of maker. It's just that very often that kind of chunky coloured glass can equally come from Japan as Czech, so I wanted to put it in there as a possibility.

i don't know those makers - but i've looked just now, thanks - as although i could spot this has some age and style, it's not entirely my taste. i like cleaner and sharper stuff. still no luck with this ... but there is one hinari piece with same kind of shape to the flat base, but nothing else about it is remotely the same.

i can find a very similar piece listed as narumi sanyu fantasy glass. photo is better than mine, more light, but shape and colours are same even if effect a little different.

Chasdevlin's suggestion of Japan has sparked a vague memory, if that is not a contradiction, looks to be an excellent suggestion.

Could this be the matching vase to your bowl? It has a Sanyu label but as it is an ebay listing this link will only last so long:

same colours pretty much, same base and shapes but in elongated form.

hard to know if they belong together, or if it’s just shared characteristics of the maker.

the pic i found and posted above, not someone else’s, matches mine. it needs hefty light and an angle to make the colours meld a little more than they initially appear in how it’s made.
