Whitefriars? Murano? Mid century ashtray / pin dish for ID
« on: February 18, 2023, 11:35:23 PM »
Hello all you glass lovers

Here is my second purchase of the week but can not find a maker - I keep coming back to Whitefriars and then cant find an exact copy then I go to Murano and can't find it there either.

If any one could point me in the right direction I would appreciate it very much.

Sapphire glass not cased with bullecante bubbles no polished pontil mark just a flat bottom. I notice most of Whitefriars have a concave polished out pontil but my one is just flat.

Any pointers of maker, age and the correct description would be most helpful.

Thanks in advance for any replies

With best regards

Don't know who made it but bullicante is not exclusive to Whitefriars and Murano. It is cased; if you look at the rim images you can see that it is mostly colourless with just the thinnest layer of colour on the interior. Clear is cheap, colour is expensive and making a large batch of pale blue would have been most unlikely when you didn't need to.

Thanks again Christine,
I've studied this dish for 15mins and believe it is uncased as there is no colour variations or layers anywhere. Even the pulled turned lips are solid blue glass - if it were cased I would see clear glass somewhere but I can not see any.
Thanks again
With best regards

Look at image 4. You can clearly see the clear outer layer. Surprising little hand blown glass is actually a solid colour.
