Help needed with gauze style vase
« on: July 29, 2023, 08:21:54 PM »
Have been having a look on the net to see if i can pin down the manufacturer of this vase.
There has been a couple of references to Nazeing but i do not have the Nazeing book to see if they did this type of work.
Any pointers gratefully received.
The vase is 150mm high and125mm at the top. And a photo for Nev.
Tim.

Nazeing Lattice may be worth checking.

These are also seen in yellow. I have a green one in the same shape as that in the original post. When I tried to find out more about it several years ago, the consensus was not Nazeing and most likely Czech. Several similar vases have been posted on the board before but many of the pics have since disappeared sadly.

Yellow example here: http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,19482

Similar technique but different shape: http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,59084
(This thread also mentions a brown example with a Czech label having been seen by Christine)

A pic of the label on a brown example from Christine’s gallery: http://lustrousstone.co.uk/cpg/displayimage.php?pid=3260

Thanks for the photo Tim, it's not one I'd have immediately thought was uranium. I can't remember seeing the pattern in my searches but I'll keep an eye out.

Here is mine - amber not uranium. It's big, what I'd call a bucket vase and I think the same shape as Christine's green one.  My photo isn't very in perspective.  Mine also has a polished large pontil mark and a firepolished rim.
The label Christine found on a brown version said Czech.

See also this lampbase but that is two colours amber over green.  So a long thread on that as there are other items in the two colours.  Not sure if they are from the same maker as the single colour items.

Thread is very long  :-[

Thanks for your response for help.
Greg, your suggestion lead me to an old thread where Nigel Benson had used some Nazeing lattice glass for an exhibition.
The type of lattice work in those examples looked a bit wider than my vase.
The type of lattice in the flying free picture looks the same as mine.
Maybe this and Christine's label points towards a Czech origin?.
I tried to take a base photo the same as Christine's and noticed a tiny bit of iridescence. Maybe an old label mark, maybe wishful thinking.
I do have a few items of Nazeing glass and when i dig them out i will see if they react to UV light.
Thanks again,
Tim

I have two Nazeing lattice bowls. One in green and white and one in blue and white.  I don't think it's the same as my amber vase.  Will try and take a pic of them together in a mo

Close up attached. The Nazeing bowl is somehow thicker and heavier although the Czech vase is also substantial and heavy. They are different heft for size somehow.  It looks like they are both done with enamels feathering though but they're differently created patterns I think.

Thanks for taking the time to post the images side by side.
The difference in technique seems quite strong.

On P9. of m's second link there's a reference to Ernst Steinwald. I was looking into this as I thought there was some similarity between yours and their "spiral" pattern.

Nev there is some discussion over those origin of those pieces including the lattice pieces.
That link says Steinwald or Kralik.
It's still under debate.
