Uranium Bowls With Bird Handles
« on: September 01, 2023, 02:53:40 PM »
Pamela has a pink one of these in her unknown section and they don't appear in any catalogue that I can find. One is 24cm. long, the other 20cm. with a finely stippled finish on the outside, smooth inside with a faint underlying pattern of squares. A guess would be possibly Schweig & Muller.

Not a pattern I've seen before Nev. Interesting pieces though.

Thanks Anne, this photo shows the detail of the birds, which are very nicely moulded. The style of the flowers might give a hint to the maker, I'll keep looking.

This probably has absolutely nothing to do with your bowls but the lovely finish on the base on yours reminded me of this one. It also has a 16 point star cut base but it's not the same star as yours:

flying free, I did consider Jobling as they made Lalique style bird figurines and bowls but I couldn't find anything similar. The bases on the bowls have been star cut, ground and polished. The seller also sent me another small one but one bird is missing.

I think the flowers are cherry blossom.
The birds and flowers are so beautifully molded. Along with the lovely stippling effect and the base the whole piece looks as though it's high quality.  I had a Schweig Muller lady that had beautifully designed and molded detail and in a teal uranium glass so can see your thinking on that.

This is a Brockwitz bowl with birds close up for comparison to yours.  It's lovely detail also, but I think the detail on yours (compare the way the leg and foot on yours are done) is far greater than this one:

This is unknown on the Pressglas Pavilion site.  I had this one years ago but in pink iirc.  It has stippling on the bowl and also a nicely molded bird:

Re the Brockwitz on M mentions on Pamela's site, the birds are separate pieces that slot into holes in the bowl rim, so a different technique than Nev's.

Not in any Jobling catalogues or advertisements that I have ever seen. The surface texture is atypical for Jobling too, and the colour looks a little pale for Jobling uranium green.

I've seen a number of these bowls over the years, but never seen one marked or catalogued anywhere. The design is probably inspired by Lalique's 'Jardinière Mésanges' which has a similar design of bird handles and blossom.

The two-handled oval jardiniere shape seems to have been much more common in Europe than in Britain.

Thanks Mosquito, I see the connection to the Lalique Mésanges(Sparrow) dish. To the naked eye, in natural light, mine are more of a lime green colour.

Back to the original item, they also come in amber and sit on a base plate, the green ones have a great glow. I think Czech Bohemian kinda thing, I searched for ages and couldn’t find their origin.
