Hand Blown Clear Glass Vase With Red Swirl
« on: September 20, 2023, 04:55:15 PM »
Hello Everyone,

I've recently started getting into glass collecting, and I have found something I find pretty interesting that I'm struggling to identify. I can't find anything else quite like it online.

Height is approximately 12.5".
Glass at rim is about 1/4" thick.
Rim is roughly 3 1/4" across.
Base is 5 1/2" across.
At its widest point it's circumference is 21"
Weight is 2.15kg

The base is smooth, though shows signs of age and it has a highly polished pontil. It's been suggested that it maybe Uranium glass and, there's no makers mark. The swirl is a deep red that travels down 2 sides of the glass and joins at the bottom.

There is a tiny but deep scratch about halfway up the vase, only a few mm long but deep enough to catch a nail on. It's so small it's hard to photograph. Otherwise in perfect condition.

There's some Carlo Moretti pieces that are similar with those broad red stripes. But I don't know the range well or know much about how they're normally finished, so that's just a tentative suggestion of something to look into rather than an ID.

Thank you for the suggestion, I'd never heard of that particular glass blower. I've just gone through his catalogues and while similar like you say there's nothing exactly the same shape or colour, though I'll keep looking.

It is definitely not uranium glass. Colourless glass is never uranium as it is a yellow colorant when used on it's own

Thanks for the reply, but I misunderstood my friend didn't say it was uranium glass but that it may have uranium salts.

I'll pick up a black light torch and see if it glows :)

It won't glow (at least not enough for uranium: a dull glow is manganese decoloriser). Uranium glass is the term used for glass coloured with uranium salts...

It only has vague similarities admittedly, but it reminded me of one I have like this one - Poschinger:

Mine is just like this one though, so I don't know if they made any variations on a theme as it were - i.e. plain red stripe and no bubbles type thing like yours.  It might be worth investigating further though.

Thanks for that, it's definitely not a Poschinger. Mine has a highly polished pontil for starters. But, Thank you.

As for it not glowing, well it doesn't at least not like uranium glass but get close enough with a black light torch and the glass glows luminous green in the small area, but only when very close to the light source though as in virtually touching.

I've had it confirmed that this is not a Carlo Moretti piece via his official website. So that's at least one other guy ruled out.

Your little close-up green glow is manganese - or dust.  :)
Cheers, Sue M. (she/her)
