Rummers and horizontal scratches ?
« on: January 14, 2024, 10:48:23 AM »
Hi , has anyone else come across rummers with horizontal scratches a bit down from the rim ? , I’ve found quite a few over the years and this is the third one I’ve found with similar scratches and it wasn’t until yesterday when a friend showed me a silver 1930’s cocktail sieve that the rusty cogs began to turn. ,any thoughts ?, I don’t think I’ve ever come across a dedicated rummer sieve !?, but maybe you have ?thanks .Just as an after thought , if sieves were used commonly then scratches like these are surely very much part of a glasses history and shouldn’t be removed ..discuss .

I have also found quite a few Rummers and larger format goblets and wine glasses
with these markings the Scottish Hot toddy also employed in other places were often
made using sugar cubes and crushers and stirrers to dissolve and or stir contents
which were designed to help with a nasty head cold or older named ailments that,
Could be consumed at home also Toddy lifters were employed earlier times for the
larger communal Rummers and punch bowls.

I've checked my rummer collection but none have scratches like your one. I'd agree they were most likely made by regular stirring of the contents. One of the reasons I like rummers is all the lumps, faults, bubbles and scratches on them, all part of their history.

Not from stirring then, could just be from glasses rubbing together on a shelf.

:o That's unusual i guess shocked to be outside the glass not inside, There lovely glasses i also collect some for my own hobby
there are so many shapes and sizes and designs to find id always leave wear and tear and not go to the trouble of polishing myself
like you say its history of the glass. Not for the purists maybe..

Here are the 3 in question , all faint wear lines on the outside and 2 of them pretty much all the way round .They are all the 1810 type.

Really like that form of Rummer huge capacity too :) Those marks are
unusual possibly as mentioned they maybe have been stored closely
in a small cupboard which has maybe caused this although many older
glasses which have been used will have quite a bit of outside scuffs
also on both rims, If i find Rummers without any scuffs and small marks
when held to a light i always feel a bit more curious as too age myself :)
I just had a delivery in the post a small Rummer it was filthy so just
given it a wash it has Hops & Barley engraving not a form i have in my
collection so far, Quite chuffed i think it is quite early too?
