2 old paperweights on stand
« on: February 18, 2024, 09:30:28 PM »
Presumed of some age as the stands/bases have a lot of wear. My research tells me maybe 1880-1920 made everywhere by anybody. Is that all. Old glass guy with limited knowledge of paperweights.

Love the one with the stand!  I think that is quite unusual and hard to find.
I like these.  I have one with an internal crack in it unfortunately.
I think they are really interesting pieces.  There is some info on the board and I think sometimes they were mistakenly described as ' wig stands ' perhaps?  I can't remember now as it's quite a while since I got mine.

The wig stand  thing did turn up in my research. At 5" in height the first weight probably a "end of day" type thing done by gaffers during down time. Random bits of colored glass arrange somewhat in a traditional paperweight manner? The fact that these were attached to the pontil rod at the top to form the foot supposedly the giveaway. Not something for sale, more for personal use or to give to family and friends. A flattened area on top ground and mostly polished. The second two piece weight and stand I really can't place at all.

Try searching for pedestal paperweight - some more info might come up.

(would not use 'end of day' - I'm not sure that's a good description :) )
