Holmegaard or Ekenas?
« on: October 18, 2024, 05:05:21 PM »
Hi, any help in identifying this tall cased vase would be appreciated.

Description: "This is a tall cased glass bottle vase.  The vase was blown in white glass cased in blue.  The vase is 36 cm (14.4 inches) in height and measures 9.3 cm (3.7 inches) in diameter at its widest point.  It weighs 610 g. (~ 1 lb. 6 oz.).  There is no signature.  There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any obvious evidence of restoration.  "

Kind regards, Neil

They are modern, maybe Chinese, variations on the Gulvase shape are now commonplace, fat, thin, tall, short, they all exist.

Thank you John, I bought it in the same lot with a signed Peter Layton/Norman Stuart Clarke piece and a signed Toni Racuv Ekenas vase.  Is it the form, type of casing (thin as with some of the Japanese vases) or something else which leads you to that conclusion for this vase?  I don't dispute it, I just want to know what to look out for next time.  Kind regards, Neil

A single attribute is rarely of much use in identification (wish it were otherwise), the item as a whole needs to be considered. In this case I can not point to anything specific, experience informs me I suppose, I have a memory of seeing these vases for sale in threes, it may have been on Alibaba or in a bricks and mortar home ware shop such as the Pier.

The photo shows three contemporary Gulvase inspired vases I have at present, the blue is from Ikea and the two amethyst with Made in China labels.
