Kitchen Measure.
« on: November 18, 2024, 01:35:27 PM »
An unusual little kitchen measure, the graduations are moulded on the inside, fluid ounces, drachms, table and tea and ML. Marked on the bottom Made in Gt. Britain with a P in a diamond and 0 4. I can't find a British maker with that mark.

I wondered if it might be one of the bottle glass makers, however on a quick search nothing has come up  :-\

Thanks flying free, I looked at bottle makers too and found nothing. As it says made in Britain it might not be English, Scottish possibly?

Ivo, my first thought was Pilkington but I couldn't find anything to support it.

It is an excellent rendition of the mark used by the Pairpoint Glass Co. Of course they are not located in Great Britain. The company did lease facilities in Spain 1958-1970 after the closing of facilities in the U.S.A. Robert Bryden manager at this time did work in a handful of European establishments in this twelve year period. To what degree unknown to me. A faint possiibility in Great Britain?

Yes I'd seen the Pairpoint mark but couldn't think why it would be on a British piece but it's still a possibility. I'll keep looking.

It says Drachms on it - used by apothecaries.

It looks quite old to me.
I wonder if it was marked in response to the Merchandise Marks Act 1887.

The only name I could think of was Pilkington as Ivo queried.  The other was Percival Vickers but I can't think that would only have a P.

The P could be who it was made for rather than who made it.

Yes probably an apothecary's measure. There is one on Ebay which appears to have a different mark so Christine may be right too, a different base could be added to the mould for each customer.
