abt. 10 cms high
glass is open at the top and base
nickel fitting is open at top and base

made for WHAT :shock:

googling the inscriptions lead to no result :?

the barrel is open at top and base - oil creeps out as the stem is a cross in horizontal cut :roll:

Pamela, does the narrower glass piece slide down inside the metal? and does the larger glass piece screw onto the metal? What does the inscription say? I can only read part of it.

Anne, yes, the barrel is screwed into the metal, the smaller glass piece (horizontally cut: a cross) is to be inserted into the barrel prior to screwing the latter onto the metal.
The red rubber ring is old and does not close perfectly anymore, perhaps it did at one time.
The smaller glass piece 'falls' through the metal holder and touches the table's surface then.
the inscription is something like:
Mueller Mulhouse BrevetÃ© SGDG

I had googled all Switzerland already, thinking it could be a Swiss Patent - unfortunately without success.

Mulhouse could be France and Switzerland BTW

Thanks Pamela. I found the meaning of two bits of the inscription (which you may know already but I'll include for completeness):

"BrevetÃ©" = patented.
"S.G.D.G." (Sans garantie du Gouvernement) is a disclaimer required by the government of France stating that it does not guarantee enforcement of the claimed patent.

With the open ends and multipart construction I wondered if it could be some kind of flow valve - would the narrow glass end take a tube slid over it?

Or could it be a sort of pie-funnel - like a more sophisticated version of the pie blackbirds?

It's certainly a puzzler!

It must be some kind of dosimeter but something is missing - not quite sure what. Perhaps a EU patent search on the French translation of dosimeter.

It looks to me as though the inscription says Weller, not Mueller. Not that that appears to help, going by Google.

Pamela, what does the exact inscription say?

Could it be a kind of reusable syringe? For agricultural use, perhaps? Does it look as though you could fit a needle to the nozzle?
