Can anyone ID this Milifiori and Latticino weight?
« on: December 13, 2006, 12:40:45 PM »
First of all what is this shape called?  It is 4 1/2" tall.  Any possible makers or just generic murano?
Thanks, Bryan

Sometimes these are called doorstop paperweights. Sometimes newell post paperweights. Although it is a heavy item, some people actually might use it for a darning bulb. You insert it into the sock and sew the hole.

It is a very nice Murano. The chalkier and larger canes are emblematic of the Murano resurgence in paperweights in the 1970s and 1980s.

A very similar item (though in red) was recently on offer at ebay:

No manufacturer mentioned - but a worn label is on the picture, which experts on Murano weights might recognise.

The first label in this row of three http://glassgallery.yobunny.org.uk/displayimage.php?pos=-1905 is the same as on the second weight, but I cannot be of any help as to the manufacturer.  :'(
If I know, I'll comment. If I think I know, I'll have a go. If I have no idea, I'll just keep quiet and learn from others, so the next time I'll know.

Most likely Toso (maybe Fratelli Toso) up to 1977.

See: http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,6323.0.html in the Murano forum.

I've seen those particular canes in stuff that I know was Fratelli Toso, so I feel confindent in say both pieces are FT.

I just love that red!
I collect Scottish and Italian paperweights and anything else that strikes my fancy.

If it is Fratelli Toso, what do the letters in the label stand for?
Thank you very much!

1) The label - and hence the letters - are for an exporter, not for Toso or some other maker. See the thread I linked to.

2) Although I agree that those type of canes may be linked to Toso, we should always bear in mind that on Murano lots of makers used canes from a few sources. So they may be Toso canes used by anoher maker. However, as stated in the thread I linked to, the exporter dealt mainly in Toso, therefore it's likely, but not yet proven, that these are Toso items.
