And if you do quote from the Glass Message Board please could you make sure our URL and the name Glass Message Board is added in full as the source of the information.
You should also ask the person who posted the information for their permission to use it in your newsletter.

Alan — Welcome to the GMB.

I know that this is off-topic, but it is a great pleasure to see coddswallop properly spelled.

On 26th December 1993 I wrote to Catherine Scharz, then editor of Chambers English Dictionary, pointing out that "cod's(-)wallop, codswallop" was mis-spelt, and, as it did not appear in Chambers until after the 1959 edition and supplement, it was most likely that neither the source nor the collector had any of the specialist knowledge needed to be able to spell it correctly, and that it should have been flagged as "spelling uncertain" as well as "origin unknown".

After a lengthy explanation of the historical background, I cited two sources, Cox 1977, and Blakeman & Smith 1983.

I also suggested that both codd and hamilton should be considered for inclusion in the dictionary.

Unfortunately I didn't even receive an acknowledgement of my letter.

Finally, if you search on this board for "elsecar", "lillicrap", or "Wood Bros", you will find enough material to keep you occupied for a while.   We would welcome some locally informed input to these topics.

Hi everyone we have our name derived from Hiram Codds marble stoppered bottle wallop being the cheap drink of the day made the term coddswallop an every day phrase we hosted the tv show balderdash and piffle where the history of words was researched and now the word coddswallop is in the dictionary with a link to Hiram Codd as its origin will post another message with the link to the page I want to use later Thanks Alan

I noticed your site includes a good selection of Target Balls, do you have any colours I have not shown here http://www.ysartglass.com/Moncrieff/MoncrieffProduct.htm a picture would be appreciated. Also have you come across any bottles that can be creditted to Moncrieff or Tomey or Perth Glass or Tay Glass, these are highly elusive and probably never marked unless for some special purpose or advertising.

AS far as I know you appear to have all the colours in the NB glassworks Target balls there is a simular ball that is the same but a plain band but cant attribute that to any paticular glassworks also many of the other balls were made for gun dealers like Greener and Jones again these were made for them but are like the NB type Regards Alan
