Hmmm thanks Pamela, I  think I'm even more confused now!    I just knew these bowls were going to be a problem as soon as I set eyes on them, but they are nice little fish and...  they're glass... and... I couldn't resist!    I think they just did it to confuse us all years later! 

Didn't someone say not too long back, on the board, that there's a place called Murano in south America?

I think "Made in Germany" replaced "made in the US zone"  some time after 1948 and was probably used up to 1960 - but I'm not willing to speculate on anything later.  I just don't know who where or when....

I went a-googling and found an interesting page on Wikipedia all about Made in Germany!  It's amazing what's on that site! 

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Made_in_Germany - seems to be saying that up to 1974 Made in Germany could mean either East or West, so that means VEB is back in the frame Pamela.

I picked this little bowl up today, it's the mermaid version of your little bowl.
I looked at it and felt it belonged in a dolls house! :usd:

Hi Meegs, isn't that sweet! I wonder if they were both from the same set - like a series of designs making up a set - or if they were two different sets?  Maybe a full set will turn up somewhere so we'll know (or we might find it in a catalogue in due course!)

The little clear mermaid bowl is the same size as your little fishy one - 4 1/2" excluding lugs in diameter and 2" high.
The larger blue mermaid and a larger fish one I have are 8 1/2"in diameter and 3 1/4" high.
There is a lot more detail in the larger versions.
The dealer I purchased it from felt like you that they may have come in sets.
I have seen many of the larger ones but this was the first small one I have ever found!
