Tall heavy Tangerine Crackle glass vase (and Thanks)
« on: February 07, 2007, 04:39:02 PM »
Dear all,
Can i just say as a relative newcomer to the Glass Message board, a big Thankyou to all
of you for all your help, and i hope im not hogging the board a bit at the moment, its just im
having great fun, and i hope most of the items i pop on have some interest to someone!

So, ive just got back from the charity shop, first time for months ive found something i like,
this vase has a nice 'quality' heavy feel to it, maybe Whitefriars, the colours right, but ive got
the book, and cant find this style, id guess 1930-50s,and English, its 12 Inches tall, 900g.
Also the body has a slight twist to it, which you can also just feel.

I predict someone will recognise this one!

It's lovely, but I don't think it's WF - orange/tangerine didn't come in until the late 60s, so that wouldn't fit if you think it's a 1930-50s piece.

Have you considered Blenko?  Didn't they do a lot of crackle?  This looks quite good for colour -ebay 150088678821 - but yours looks denser.  Is it orange crackle cased in clear glass?

Andy what's your ebay addy so I can watch for those plates?  Thanks Cat

I've never seen WF this. I am fairly sure it's not. Great colour though.

It looks Italian to me, and somehow it's just crying out for a matching lid with a clear glass bobble on the top.   :)

My first thought was Italian too, but I was quite surprised by the glass being crackle glass.  :o

Another American maker to consider aside from Blenko would be Kanawha who produced tangerine and amberina crackle glass during the 1960's and 70's.

Hi,
Cat, my ebay is aph1960, nothing on there at present, but i will make an effort to clear a bit of
space soon!

I dont think this ones Italian (although the twisted foot looks a bit like it, c50s)
American , maybe, ive also found a yellow Pilgrim decanter that has similar style.
The colour is Whitefriars 1960s, but the construction and foot makes me think earlier,
it has never had a lid, the rim is not even completely round, in fact if you twist the vase in your
hand, it has straight bits round bits, completely hand blown, hand made, constructed in 3 parts,bowl/stem/foot, and instinct tells me pre 1950s!
And, as usual, now ive cleaned it, put it on my shelf, im going to find it hard to part with!
Cheers Andy

Me again!
Ive found some similar Blenko stuff, orange, crackle, in Leslie Pina, circa 50s glass,
as  ive never handled Blenko, does it have an individual handmade feel to it, or more
of a factory made feel?

Hi again Andy, unfortunately I've also never handled Blenko despite wanting to - it just doesn't seem to make it's way over to Surrey!  Anyway, I had some amberina crackle glass a while back (now sold) and I've just dug out my old notes - if this is American then the main factories producing crackle glass in the last 50 years were Blenko, Rainbow, Pilgrim, Kanawha, Bischoff and Viking.  Hope this helps.

It looks Italian - Empoli to me  ???

I have looked in my American Crackle Glass book which covers all the American crackle glass makers that Pip mentioned and there is nothing remotely similar.

I also looked in Popular 50s & 60s Glass Color Along the River which does not show any similar pieces (even in non-crackle glass) by American glass companies.
