Id help for a mixed lot of glass please.
« on: February 11, 2007, 06:45:16 PM »
I was fortunate enough to get a mixed lot of glass at auction yesterday - and spent most of last night and some of today trying to identify the 9 bits that came with the Whitefriars optic rib (9587) vase that I bought it for ::)

An Aseda ruby bubble JIP vase (stickered "Swedish Art Glass") was easy.  And I have discarded a heavily damaged red lobed, cased, vase which you often see in junk shops at 50p - or less...

But these have me stuck at the moment, can anyone help me in the right direction to ID them please?

This one looks like some of the small bowls on Le Casson's useful Sklo Union site but I'm not convinced  http://glassgallery.yobunny.org.uk/displayimage.php?pos=-5042

There are two neodymium vases that I suspect are Caithness, but I haven't any book covering their output.  Is there a good website for Caithness?
Daylight  http://glassgallery.yobunny.org.uk/displayimage.php?pos=-5043
Artificial   http://glassgallery.yobunny.org.uk/displayimage.php?pos=-5040
Detail  http://glassgallery.yobunny.org.uk/displayimage.php?pos=-5044

Then what looks very Italian to me, but that is really outside my knowledge  http://glassgallery.yobunny.org.uk/displayimage.php?pos=-5045

Another smallish dish - could it be Sklo?   http://glassgallery.yobunny.org.uk/displayimage.php?pos=-5039

I thought this was Whitefriars as well, but can't find it in the catalogues - might it be Scandinavian? http://glassgallery.yobunny.org.uk/displayimage.php?pos=-5050

And Finally http://glassgallery.yobunny.org.uk/displayimage.php?pos=-5049  I have seen these before but cannot remember where or when?

Oh dear, that went on a bit didn't it :)  I would be very grateful for any suggestions as to where to go to find these items, I just hate seeing them sitting there with little idea of who made them etc.

Hi Tim,

I think that your first little bowl is by Kaj Franck, but I really am not sure.  :-\ Not much help really.
If I know, I'll comment. If I think I know, I'll have a go. If I have no idea, I'll just keep quiet and learn from others, so the next time I'll know.

The little blue 'whitefriars' looks like Holmegaard? and the last flint bowl ive seen
before, i think its modern Kosta or Orrefors.

Della, you're spot on - these bowls (which came in lots of nice colours) were designed by Kaj Franck and produced by both Nuutajarvi and Arabia.  They always sell extremely well :-)  And the last bowl in flint I'm pretty sure is Dartington.

Andy - thanks, I'll go hunting the Scandi stuff.

Frank - good to see the Caithness underway, I remember going round the Kings Lynn factory on a school trip about 18 years ago but they were only making very basic wares then.

Marcus - thanks for checking, I did get a couple of real bits (or at least I hope I did!)  http://glassgallery.yobunny.org.uk/thumbnails.php?album=332

Della and Pip - many thanks, 1 down ;D  Any idea what the colour might be called?  I can't decide wether it is bluish or greenish :-\  I'll go check the Dartington catalogues as well.

Any other thoughts?
Tim

Tim, it looks smokey grey in the photo - I've had these bowls in light blue, dark blue, dark green and amber - not the colour you've got.  I'd say it was smoked personally.  I have a photograph of the last lot I sold - one of which had an 'Arabia, Finland' sticker to the base.  Bear with me, I'll find it and put it up here so you can see the other colours.

Now that is how I have only seen them photographed, Pip. That is why I was not totally sure. I should just go with my gut feeling more often. I have seen diagrams of them too, in my faithful little book.  ;D

I better be on the look out for some of those little blighters  >:D
