Topic: London Scenes drinking set. Who made them?

Ooh, this feels kinda strange, stepping into new territory. 

I have this boxed set of gilt edged drinking glasses. There is a code stamped on the box and judging from the box and the transfer pictures, I would guess that they date to the late 50's.
Can anyone enlighten me?

Coool! I saw a set like this listed on eBay recently - in fact, I think we commented on them at the time?

We came to the conclusion that, erm, we didn't know   The '58' stamp could be an indication to age - it certainly has that 'look & feel', IMHO. It alludes to being 'Decorated in England', which suggest the glass could be foreign, so that might be worth following up.

You may have noticed the glasses in the box do not match the picture on the outside - the ones in the box are machine made. I have the Trafalgar square one in yet another shape: same transfer, different glass. So this suggests they have been in production for a considerable time.  So question: when did they stop white top decks on London Buses?

else it will be one of the decorating companies not yet listed here. They seem to be good survivors with lots of these boxed sets selling on eBay, or not selling and being frequently relisted.

I think the ones with white sections were a different bus company that did longer suburban/centre routes. At least from 50's until 70's. Not a separate period.

Just on the offchance - I don't suppose there are any marks to the base of the glasses, Della?

Pirelli sourced blanks from France, and other countries. No doubt the other decorating companies did too.

Right, so French glasses, imported by a British decorator, using a British (?) made transfer.

A quck flick through this site www.lbpt.org/dd.htmlsuggests that the AEC Regent white-topped buses were introduced by London Transport in the 1930s and withdrawn in the 1950s. The all-red Routemasters (as packaging) entered service  in 1958. So the transfer design pre-dates the packaging design and as the last Routemasters were withdrawn on 9 December 2005...it dosen't really leave us any closer
