How can I find out more about this obelisk?
« on: February 25, 2007, 03:20:14 PM »
I have treated myself to some additions to my own collection over the last few days.  This three sided obelisk was part of an auction lot, and I rather like it. It's quirky and not my usual taste at all, but it just appeals. It's 19 cms tall, and the glass is mirrored so the two angels appear to be four. The angels are engraved on the back and there are some etched details on the face. The angels appear to be playing a catching game with a halo. It is signed underneath by S A Palmer and there are some very faint etched initials and numbers. I think they are "L L G C 67".

Two questions:  how can I find out more about the maker of this obelisk, and is it worth trying to get the chip on one edge repaired/disguised in some way?

Thanks,

Hi,
The pattern looks very similar to a flask vase I have just listed under "all Mdina?".
The colour pattern and shape design is very similar to other pieces designed by Mdina Malta in the 1960/70's. The signiture is not known to me as most would just have the word Mdina on the base in script. Could be a rare one.

Sorry Bryn, I had posted the wrong link to the picture. Your Mdina flask is indeed very much like my newly acquired Mdina vase in colouring. Mine is signed Mdina underneath.

I really would like to know if anyone can enlighten me about the obelisk. Is S A Palmer still alive and working with glass?  ??? I'd like to know if the two angels are meant to represent real people. Is there some symbolism in the fact that the upper angel appears to be unsighted?  :-\ I must consult my symbolism in art book...

Thanks David. I was so excited I went and ordered it! The Amazon blurb is quite encouraging too - refers to Messrs Palmer as amongst the world's top glass engravers. I will keep you posted.
