I picked this up the other day and wondered if anyone can guess what it is? I do know, but it has quite a strange use! Just 9cm long.
-
Maybe a knife rest? ::)
Carolyn
-
Are you liable to be arrested using one of these? :o :24:
-
My first thought was a urinal although the size and positioning of the opening doesn't seem quite right :spls:
-
Carolyn: Nope, but I see your train of thought.
Keith: Only if you put it somewhere you shouldn't!
Anik: It is very small... ;)
It is a hollow vessel with a tube on top. The 'head' of the 'dog' does have a small aperture. This is the part that might give a clue: the shape and size of the 'head'.
-
A fruit-fly trap? (too small for wasps)
I think it might be a water container/dispenser for a small rodent cage.
-
Not a fly trap - the aperture is only about 7mm diameter - nor a water dispenser for rodents. Good guesses though!
But it is intended to hold water and dispense it, but not for drinking.
-
It's a thingy for watering your plants slowly while you're away on holiday.
(but drosophila melanogaster would get through a 7mm gap  )
-
Nope. But I'll give the answer this evening.

I stand corrected. Interesting to know that a mouse can squeeze through a gap no wider than a pencil...
-
A pipe?
One of those *BAD* pipes for smoking Wacky Tobacco? Just a guess here, as I only ever tried in once (honest) in my life. Was not for me................but that is my guess.
I dunno......
-
Did booze come in it.....poss??

:spls:
I think I got it............it is a PIPE, as I said in another post just before -- SEE BELOW:

Am I right? Did I win?
-
More good guesses, and I can see the thinking, but wrong again.
However, if you chose another orifice (ooer, Missus!) in the facial area, you'd be closer.

right or wrong ???????????????
-
Wrong. I think that post was edited after I had replied.
-
It's for getting hot oil into your ears.
yuk.
-
No, but I'll tell you now.
It's a Boots Glass Nasal Douche, made by Regaid - still yuk though! :-X
I'll post a picture of the box later.

Ummmm drosophila are fruit flies not mice... I have an American penfriend who studied these in great detail many years ago and the name has always stuck with me... having said that mice can get into some very small gaps for sure!
Interesting item though David... I wonder how big a seller it was...? Any idea of its age...?
-
Erm, yes, I know the difference between flies and mice - I was just expanding on the theme of how animals can squeeze through remarkably narrow spaces. Ferrets were used at the 1953 Coronation, for example, to lay the TV cables and minimise disruption to Westminster Cathedral.
The box is in remarkable condition, but possibly 1950s? I'll just set up the camera and post a piccy.
-
Here's a photo of the glass, box and instructions. As usual, I do have a penchant for the weird! The price on the box appears to be 9½d, pencilled in at the top-right corner. No idea on age, but I do know the Boots archivist, so I'll see if she can advise.
Hmm, perhaps it should be called a Douche-hound? ;D
-
David, there's an earlier-looking boxed one in Google cache from eBay.ie HERE (http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:4vKyyeE-a08J:cgi.ebay.ie/Hand-Made-Blown-Glass-Nasal-Douche-Boots-Original-Box_W0QQitemZ220553975901QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Collectables_Scientific_MJ%3Fhash%3Ditem335a0a985d+boots+glass+nasal+douche) - added for interest as the shape is slightly different to yours.
-
Ah, that is interesting - I agree that's an earlier box, so maybe 1930s? I think the blue pattern of mine is 1950s.
-
Are these likely to have been made by Chance Bros?
-
I doubt it. It looks lampworked, and not something Chance ever did, so appears to be made by Regaid. I did wonder if it was borosilicate, in which case Chance might have supplied the tube.
-
It struck me last night that Michael colud have done with this a few (quite a few) years ago.
I had to work weekends sometimes, Michael would make dinner for us.
One Sunday afternoon, I had a desperate 'phone call to the lab. A little voice wailed;
"Sue, what do I do about chilli-up-the-nose?"
He could have put yoghurt up it if he'd had one of these!
-
This beggars the question; why did he put a chili up his nose? ;D
-
I've learned not to ask Michael questions like that, David. :nogos:
