Blue Satin Glass Vase.
« on: August 03, 2007, 05:35:29 AM »
Can anyone help with the ID and date of this vase?  Haven't seen it as yet, as still in the post, but can't find another like it. Would it be from one of the USA glass workshops, Mt Washington, Phoenix or Fenton maybe. It appears to be in a blue satin glass, stands 12in.

It looks like an air-trap vase (where the pattern is made by air trapped in a design between two layers of glass), also known as Mother of Pearl, or MOP. It is especially nice, if it is air-trap, because of the ribbing and also the little ovals that the air seems to be trapped in.

It's a beautiful vase...typical of the 1880s period.
I actually think this could be English...maybe Stevens & Williams or Thomas Webb.
This gourd-like shape was quite popular with English makers, especially in the Mother of Pearl Satin glass.

Have now received this gorgeous vase. Have searched Thomas Webb and Stevens & Williams,  but can't come up with anything similar, could it be Murano? I have taken a few more photos, it has a pontil mark.

Anyone else have any ideas?

Hi again,
glad it arrived safely.
It definitely is not Murano. They did do some repros of this type of mother of pearl satin glass in the 1960s & 1970s, but your vase is an original Victorian piece, most likely English in origin. Murano did not produce air trap satin glass of this style in the Victorian era, & even their later 20th century repros of it, whilst being attractive, are not up to the high standard of Victorian era workmanship.
The gourd like shape is a style used by a number of Stourbridge makers in the later 19th century. It was typically used for satin & also cameo glass items.

Hello Marinka,
Thanks for that, now I feel really guilty, as I paid next to nothing for it. Was only packed in a piece of newspaper, so was holding my breathe when I unpacked it. Just love it, it's really stunning and it's very hard to get the true beauty in a photo. I'll look up Stourbridge, must admit don't know anything about Victorian glass!

Glad it got there in one piece as well! There are similar but not identical patterns on p. 152 - 156 in Gulliver's Victorian Decorative Glass - you might be able to find it in a library.

Stewart Island, eh? What a wonderful (if cold) place to live! We lived in Dunedin for 7 years.

Hello Cathy,
Thanks for that, am off searching for the book. You're right, it's dash cold out there, but not as bad as Dunedin!

It's a real beauty, Sandy! Please only rinse with warm (never hot!) water and give 2 or 3 crushed dental tabs into it  :D

Thanks Pamela, Inside the vase it looks like it is pitted on the base, bit similar to what polystyrene looks like if it has had heat on it. Bit hard to explain!
