I didn't think whitefriars did much flashing on glass apart from the fancy stuff manufactured by the Chance brothers in the 50's.

The ground pontil, although associated with whitefriars really only indicates that it is hand blown.

Best wishes,

Wes

Whitefriars and Chance weren't the same company and Chance didn't make this sort of stuff anyway!! Chance flashed glass is all slumped glass. Continental Europe seems a better bet for your lovely bowl.

I agree with all everything you say Lustrousstone. I thought though that Chance bros did some designing for Whitefriars in the 1950's red flash on clear poss? -  nothing like this example though.

Best wishes,

Wes

Hi Wes, a little confusion I think between Whitefriars and Geoffrey Baxter. Baxter is known to have used some of the Chance flashed blanks for intaglio work for his degree show. This was *before* he joined Whitefriars.

Thank you for clarifying this for me Anne.

This website is so useful for novices like myself for building up a knowledge bank.

On the downside, I now want to find an example of this for my collection and it sounds like it is going to cost me!  :P

Best wishes,

Wes
