Jaffe Rose Glass Importers - Label
« on: April 14, 2009, 08:22:03 AM »
There is a thread from a long time back that mentions Jaffe Rose as an importer of glass, and as I have just obtained a box of glass with their label on it I thought someone would appreciate seeing it.  And were they really "the most distinguished china and Glass House in Europe" ??!

Any ideas about the sundae dishes inside the box would be most welcome - manufacturer, country, likely date etc.
Iain

It's a grapefruit dish rather than a sundae dish - the upturned base was to put the pips into.  I have loads of these in different styles and colours and haven't managed to run many of them to earth yet even though many glassworks seem to have made them.

One clue might be the word granat on the label - it's German for garnet (perhaps the colour name?) - does granat exist in other languages also?

I'm pretty sure my Jaffe Rose vase was Czech made.

Granat is also a grenade  :)

Garnets are usually a deep red colour, no?

Yep that's right Chris, I was puzzling over the colour in the picture - it doesn't look dark red!

I was searching for something and came across the thread. The search had been started by this item on eBay
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=380136847994 [Mod: Long link shortened]
The listing is for a two colour ashtray with bubbles in the bottom, which the seller attributes to Jaffe Rose, Czechoslovakia. He says that there is a label on the bottom. I've written asking what is actually written on the label. The other Jaffe Rose glass I've seen (including the vase from Bubbles) seems to include bubbles and most sources seem to believe that they were made in Czecholslovakia. I wonder if granat means anything in Czech. Just checked and it means garnet and grenade in Czech also.

Granat works in Czech, in German and in all the Scandinavian languages...
