Topic: I.D. for tall vase with etched fish and seaweed

Hello!

Can anyone ID the maker of this vase please?

(I must apologise for the terrible photographs, but I found it quite difficult to capture the detail).

It has a shoal of fish (approx. 28) swirling upwards from one side and around the front.  Above the fish are groups of air bubbles and beneath 6 interwoven pieces of seaweed.

It is 11.25 inches tall (28.5cm), 5 inches at its widest point and weighs 1.9kg.

The rim is dead horizontal with the inner and outer edges cut diagonal at about 1mm in depth.

(Obviously the base is unsigned).

Given there are some chips and scratches, it looks like it may have a bit of age to it.

Thanks for the info.  Whitefriars had crossed my mind but looking at the catalogues available on Whitefriars.com (1957 and 1964) the fish vases seemed to have deeply diagonally cut rims and were a little shorter.

Having said that, I have just noticed a vase on page 85 of the Jackson book (without fish) which has a totally flat thick polished rim, although it is still shorter.  I also wonder whether the small fish on vase C533 in the 1964 catalogue are similar to the one on mine - only someone with that vase would be able to say as their is insufficient detail in the catalogue photo.

I will have to try on whitefriars.com as you say!

The fins on the backs of the fish are different to my WF fishy vase - the one with the whale thing on the other side - the WF fins are simply a cut line, similar to the tail bits.

These are a bit more sophisticated than WF.

I've just checked some fish glasses from Krosno (contemporary - TKMaxx)with shoals of cut fish swimming around too - and again, the fins are less sophisticated than these.

Added to this the bubbles, I'd agree it's something rather nice, but don't know more, sorry.

My t'penny 'orth.....the fish on this vase is cut and not etched, well, they certainly seem to be formed by polished mitre cuts.

I would say NOT w/f's. There are also shoal fish vases of German origin from the 1960's. Might be worth following up; sorry just from memory, not sure of manufacturers.
