mottled studio? vase - anyone recognise this at all please?
« on: April 01, 2010, 09:58:09 AM »
I have searched quite thoroughly through images etc for this but not come across anything similar even in technique.
Does anyone recognise the colours/shape/design or have any clues for me to follow up please?
It is cased clear, textured inside but not out, is nicely finished, polished pontil and base shaped and finished around the pontil to stand flat.  It is 7"wide by about 4 1/2" high.

many thanks
m

Miranda, i watched that on ebay all week, my instincts said it was interesting,
and very very nearly bid for it, but thought id leave it for some other lucky buyer,
very pleased you got it, and i hope im green with envy when you find out more,
my thoughts were possibly good bohemian, any sign of age wear?
Andy

Hi Andy

Thanks  ;D  Great minds? ;)

Some very minor signs of wear but not sufficient to make me think ages old - but then....who knows?  I didn't think of Bohemian, it didn't occur to me to be honest, but then I haven't seen enough glass to know.   It is quite heavy.   The rim, whilst it looks thick, is shaped inside to the curve and has a small lip around if you run your finger round inside the rim, where it curves up.  It is very nicely made.  And I like the technique. It does have quite a few bubbles in dotted around, it also has some frit (uuhhh I think that is the right word :-\ ) in places.  The colours are mottled grey/blue, white, pink and orange.  Really pretty.  I did search extensively before bidding on it, but in the end just thought, hey why not  ;D

Off to search Bohemian and see if that leads anywhere  ;D

It vaguely reminded me of some Loetz marbley patterns from the 30s, but i didnt think it was,
so i think Bohemian is not very likely, Im not really into pink glass, although it looks much better in
your photos, and the polished pontil is a good sign.

just realised what you meant re Bohemian (Well I think I did) and no, it isn't the same.
I do think it's possibly a studio piece and not that old.  I'll keep hunting - all part of the fun ;D

ok so what I thought you were thinking wasn't the same ;D
so, following your lead I came up with this
http://www.titusomega.com/Object%20Profile%20and%20Photos/Old%20profiles/GLASS/loetz-miniature--blueorange.htm

I know the colour is different (mine is predominantly pink with spotches of orange white and pale gery/bluey) but the technique/effect looks remarkably similar.

I also came up with this onw below - and close up lit up, this is what mine looks like, but without the swirly bit.

Or am I way off the mark?

The shape just doesn't seem sophicated enough for me to think it might be Bohemian :-\

You need Craig or Warren or another Boho expert to look in,
you could ask a Mod to put Bohemian? in the title.

Thanks Andy, will do and thanks for your help so far :)
Thus far the observations I have are, that it sits very well with my Norwegian glass and it does have similarities in the technique with some pieces I have found and also own, but it also has similarities with the Bohemian glass you linked to and the other two I found.
There is a  mark on it that looks like it could be a very very miniscule and minute signature, but I think I am grasping at straws possibly on that  ;D

I think if I could find a similar shape I might feel more comfortable with it being either of the above, but that is proving elusive at the moment  ::)

Mods if you read this and have time,  please could you add in Bohemian? into the heading?  Many thanks

Hi Miranda,
i asked Craig, (obscurities )
He has had a look, doesnt think Bohemian, probably contemporary studio work .
so i think that avenue is closed   :P
Cheers
