Miloslav Janku fish for ZBS -- but what colour?
« on: November 25, 2010, 10:53:06 AM »
I won this wonderful Miloslav Janku 23,5cm fish which I'm extremely pleased with.  ;D   I'm kind of posting to show off, but I'd also like to know about the colour, and whether it suggests 'newer' production, or 'older' production.

In this thread, http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,28061.15.html, Marcus gives the names of colours ZBS used for its hot-worked animals and fish.  Jindrich maintains that the lighter colours were used more recently.

The colour of my happy fish is not in Marcus' list...  When looked at in normal lighting conditions, the piece looks like a dark brownish-grey.  But when held up to the light, it's a magnificent light amethyst colour which is darker in the head and body, and goes to almost clear in the tail.  Unfortunately, the amethyst is impossible to capture in a photo.

I appreciate all comments.  Thank you for looking.  :)

I can't date your fish, Anik, but we recently had a thread about ZBS vases in this particular brown-amethyst colour (can't find the link at this moment, but I'm sure it was somewhere within the past two weeks), and my four ZBS vases and ashtrays made in that colour I think are very recent. There isn't any sign of wear on any of them.

Thank you, Astrid.  :kissy:

I remember the link -- but what slightly confuses me is the lack of brown in my piece when I hold it up to the light.  It's light amethyst.  What colour are your pieces in the other link?  Are they also light amethyst, or are they brownish?

Here are mine:

http://bohemiabloggen.blogspot.com/2010/09/glasdjur.html

I recieved a Clum u Trebone vase by Gabrhel today that was described by the seller as "smokey brown" but when I got it it's a pretty distinctive amethyst, probably the same color you're talking about.

Best Regards
Emil

The colour of my pieces is mostly brown, but in certain light a purple/amethyst tone seems to be present. I can't check at the moment, since I only have artificial light available that shows them as brown - it's probably sunlight/daylight that shows them different. If the amethyst in your piece is more pronounced, then maybe it's not the same colour.

Langhamer, The Legend of Bohemian Glass, p. 203 has a picture of three Janků animals from "the early 1970's." One is a mid green colour and two are purple/amethyst, quite transparent. I have the green bird pictured and a citrine bunny, both signed.

They're pictured here

When we are talking early and late what dates are we talking about?

David

Just noticed what an ugly pictured of the bunny that is.  As they say on eBay and dating sites (so I'm told), looks much better in person.

Hi friends,
to make the complicate issue more complicated I haveto inform you (and bOBA can confirm it) that we have seen several Janků dolphins in show room of Jaroslav Svoboda AGS factory in Karlov. So not only ZBS did produce this popular fish recently.
