John DItchfield Glasform - my first piece - any info please
« on: December 15, 2010, 09:37:17 AM »
Is there no end to beautiful glass? I have just bought this - my first piece of John Ditchfield Glass. I doubt it will be lonely for long.
Can't find much about Glasform except what is on their own site. So I know they only started in 1982 - and come from Lancashire - like me ;D

Can anyone help me with info about this piece? Is it what is called a landscape? and is it possible to tell when it was made ? perhaps from the glasform inscription or anything else? It is 9cm or 3 1/2 inches diameter

Any info welcomed, and or books /websites to help with my education  ;D

Thanks   :usd:

Hi Jackie.
I don't want to be the party pooper but what you have is suspect.
I want to be proved wrong but the signature doesn't look right to me nither the way your piece has been made.
It looks as though you have a polished pontil mark on the back and that doesn't sit with the way Ditchfield Landscapes are made.
A few years back there were allot of Ditchfield glass that was faked and that sig looks the same as the one on those pieces.
Send a picture to JD they are pretty good at replying to authenticate pieces.
I sincerely hope i am wrong.

It's a beautiful beast, I far prefer it to the thousands of pws there are with small silver things stuck on them.
I've looked at my 3 renderings of the word "Glasform" on my vases, the "f" does look suspect, (it's a small form f in the middle of capitals - it has a curly top) but all three I have are different in themselves.
Sorry I can't be of more help.

Thanks for the heads up Mike, I have sent the photos to Glasform and asked the question.

And thanks Sue - it is a beautiful beast, and will stay on display even if it is faked.

cannot understand why - if you can make something this good - would you not want to sign it with your own name??

will post any info I get back from Glasform in due course.

Alot of these things come in from China and have no value other than a few pounds but stick somone elses name on it and you can start sticking naughts on the end and con to unsuspecting buyers.

I personally don't give a hoot where it was made or by whom - I don't subscribe to Chinese glass being "worthless" because it's Chinese - or to something being worth a lot because it's a "name".
It's either good or it's not, on it's own merits.
But I do get mad at unscrupulous folk defacing glass.

Any piece of glass is worth what ever someone is prepared to pay for it and some pieces are more desirable than others. Free market economics.

Hello
No the piece was made at our studios. The ‘Landscape Disc’ is probably about 20 years old .The disc was produced in a day scape and a night scape which yours is. With regards the signature at that time it would have only been signed Glasform. As the item is standing up we would not have left the pontil mark. Hopefully this is all the information you need.
Regards
Karen Ditchfield>>
