Clear torpedo(?) shaped vase for id
« on: January 31, 2011, 06:19:20 PM »
Ok, so its rather plain but I think the feel and overall finish on this one is beyond what I have so far encountered. The base is ground with an almost circular pontil mark, The rim is rounded with the glass thickness graduated toward the top and bottom. It's 230mm tall - Any chance of an ID?

It looks very much like the type of vase that Sven Palmqvist designed for Orrefors, but no marking, so I would guess some other Scandinavian company, many of which did similar pieces.

Simple and classic.

I wondered if the glass itself is a pale blue - a typical Swedish colour for Stromberg & Orrefors.  Looks vaguely Stromberg to me.

Any chance of a photo of the base and one of the top rim.

Hi Ross,

There is defiantly a blueish tint.

Apparently many of the major factories sold "blanks" for smaller establishments to engrave, I wonder if this could be what you have here.

None of the similar vases bases I have have a ground out pontil - they are all ground flat.

Let us hope Daniel looks in, I suspect he will be able to advise better.

Leerdam did similar things too ('designed' by Floris Meijdam) - and although I do not recognise this particular tall one, the bottom treatment is very Leerdam. Choice of material is glass, semicrystal ("sonoor") and lead crystal, colours can be clear to bluish.  I have several of the shorter ones.  Not saying it is, but not saying it isn't....

Similar bases can also be found on Strombergshyttan vases like these two:

I have seen them both signed and unsigned, the first vase has a very rounded but still triangular form.

I'm not at home to look at my glass right now, but my recollection is that the mouth's finish isn't inconsistent with how Orrefors would look. I also have a marked Orrefors with a base like that, so I wouldn't rule out Orrefors. And if Ivo says Leerdam is a possibility, then I'd definitely keep them in mind, too.
