Thank you everyone for your help! I'm delighted to know what this piece is, and how to research it further. I can stop calling it "the Triffid" now :D  Here's some better daylight photos for those interested. Thanks again - there is so much to learn on this board!

That's definitely uranium, and it can come and live at my house any time

Thanks everyone! definitely need to get that book!  Since I now know what I have, is there anything special I should know about caring for uranium glass? I sometimes leave it on the window sill with my plants and it looks lovely there, but should I avoid direct sunlight?

My uranium glass is all over the house. It needs no more special care than any other glass. Just be careful because it's old. Don't put it in the dishwasher. But you should be careful about putting any glass on windowsills to avoid the risk of a fire starting when the glass focuses a beam of light onto something flammable. My windowsills only get less direct light and the uranium stuff looks particularly good on the sill that faces more westerly.

If you are interested in uranium glass then you need to get a UV light. The key ring sort that come with an invisible pen can be good.

Great advice! We mostly have south and north light, here, and the north is indirect, so I'll try the Kralik there on the sunporch once our temps rise above freezing again :)  Thanks again for all your help.
