Hi Thomas

I think it is stunning, I am going to wander off and see what I can find. The decoration rings a bell.........

Lovely sunny day - I have been digging the garden.

Regards

hello Thomas - what a stunner       I'm the worlds least knowledgeable person about rock crystal decanters, but thought I would try a little sleuthing for you. :)   I have trawled the Thomas Webb Museum (Dennis Hall) Catalogue (undated - can you believe it!!  -  but knocked out sometime in the last 30 years I would imagine).  Kretschmann spent only about a year at Corning, apparently, in the late C19 - having gone there directly from Webb's (did he go gack to Webb's afterwards???) - however, unfortunately, there is no reference whatsoever, in the catalogue, against any of the nearly 400 pieces, of the name Kretschmann.     Several references to Fritsche and Kny, of course, but not your man Kretschmann  -  I wonder why that should be?    Just thought I would mention that I had looked thru this particular catalogue to save anyone else the time. :)

:hi: Thomas - I can see it is stunning work and a gorgeous shape
(not my taste -  the intaglio work is a bit "ormalu" for me, I suffered a surfeit of ormalu as a child, dragged round nearly every single palace and chateau and castle in Europe by mother :thud:)

but I want to know how the metal handle is stuck to the body of the jug at the bottom!
Cheers, Sue M. (she/her)

hm kretschmann was just a guess ... i found some similar sketches .. it doesn´t look like stevens & williams to me .. but it is a very unusual piece because of the islamic influence .. therefor i think it was made for someone special in former times .. god knows :-)

- and chopin liszt - what means "ormalu" :hi:

Hello Thomas....what a beautiful Claret Jug....when you say 'rock crystal', do you mean quartz crystal, or is this a name for a type of crystal glass, like lead crystal?

I have had a look at your album and am so in awe of such a beautiful collection....one day it will become THE collection of claret jugs that everyone refers to when talking about claret jugs....that is, if it isn't already. Thank you for sharing it with us....I feel very priviledged to have viewed them. :sun:

Rosieposie - "Rock crystal cut" is a very special and complex type of cutting and engraving with acid polishing. It simulates the few very rare pieces of true rock crystal carving of objects such as decanters.

Thomas, ormalu is the excess very ornate curly, curvey, frilly, leafy, glided metal stuff applied to antique furrniture anywhere it can be attached.... in the style of the cutting and engraving on your decanter.

Thanks Sue....always like to learn new stuff ....as a crystal therapist and crystal (as in gemstones) collector, I immediately assumed it was quartz (rock) crystal.

It is a very beautiful decanter Thomas, and I don't mind the 'ormalu' effect at all. :sun:
