Topic: Ripple Pattern Bowl with 2 Registration Marks. Maker Question

Hello Everyone,
I'm sure I was reading about two registration marks here on the GMB in the last few days but I can't find the thread and now I have a question!
I have an amber ripple pattern bowl with the two following registration marks:
G.BRIT. RD 833702
AUSTRALIA 19220     ( this may be 18220 )

My question is was this made under licence in Australia or was the bowl made in Great Britain for the Australian market and the Australian registration made to stop the pattern being copied?

Hi Meegs

I cannot really help that much other than say its George Davidson registered 24th  Febuary 1939, my guess would be that it was made in the UK for export

If that is the case were items then destined for other export markets registered in their country of destination also?
For example if a shipment was destined for Canada would it have a Brit rego and a Canadian one.

According to Chris & Val Stewart's site, Davidson started registering some designs in Australia after their 255 Barrel Can was copied by a Japanese company who undercut Davidson in the Australian market:

A lot of UK ceramics have Australian registrations as well, I'm particularly thinking Carlton Ware.  I don't remember seeing other items registered (apart from patents) in more than one country, but I suspect Australia was the big problem because it is so near (relatively speaking) to Japan where perhaps it was easy to copy and then undercut the prices of imported goods. Japan was a huge exporter of low-cost goods post-war, much like China is today.
