Mid Century Czech?? Who made this one??
« on: April 16, 2011, 12:31:33 AM »
Another antique mall piece today....  so again, sorry for the image quality... but my phone was all I had....

About 6 inches tall... polished bottom with no pontil....  just flat.....  and quite thick glass....

Pink ground with applied blue design to the surface...... colors are a little more subtle than the pics... but not a whole lot...

Suggestions...

Is it Czech, and if so, by who??

TIA

Craig

It has some similarities with an early piece from Mdina, is the body pink or amethyst?

Similar form, the bottle on this page: http://www.artiusglass.co.uk/id32.html

John

Edited to add: Michael Harris experimented with trailed decoration: https://picasaweb.google.com/Johnmj100/EarlyMdinaGlass#5594226159044062466

The body is pink, the trailings are blue..... It is not signed at all, but looks very much to be the same as the large piece on the link.  Is this decor rare?

Thanks,
Craig

Very rare. If it is from Mdina then it will be circa 1969. I think Sue knows of four or so of the tall bottles, I have never seen a smaller vase in that sort of pattern. That Zig Zag vase of mine is one of two that I know about.

The button rim, the flat polished base and especially the way the trails are formed make me think Mdina and Michael Harris.

I can see where you're coming from, John, but the colours are completely wrong, and it just doesn't look right at all.
I'd say not Mdina at all.
There are 6 amethyst strapped bottles known - though 2 of them are hearsay.

In response to color, the color in the pics is quite a bit brighter and stronger than on the piece..  neither are as strong as the image shows....  I showed the link image to Peggy, and she thought the colors looked very similar to the piece when we held it.

It is also pretty thick glass.....  and quite well executed..... I only thought Czech due to the color combination, and the fact that it did not really strike me as Italian. We do not see much Mdina glass over here though....

If you do decide to buy it Craig I would love to see some more photos.

Plenty of Mdina production was exported to the States before 1972 (one of their first export markets), you may not see much as after all, you have a sizable country there. How many items per head of population could there be?  ;D

The main body appears to be pink in clear glass, does the strapping have a clear casing?

Still not Mdina.

Here are some more images of the piece....  Pink in clear with a nicely finished base. No clear casing on the strapping. The color of the clear around the mouth of the piece is a little yellow in appearance..... be it only slightly...  it is not as clear as the base appears to be.

Height is 6.75 inches, and width is 4.5 inches at the waist.
