Is this a Murano Alrose ashtray?
« on: September 02, 2011, 02:47:14 PM »
I'm a bit of a Murano pudding but i think I have this identified.  Any experts able to confirm?  It's 11cm across at it's widest points and has a smooth ground out pontil mark

Any help much appreciated as ever

I think these might be Japanese, though I'm not sure.

 >:D I used to keep my green scrubby kitchen thingies in mine - so no, it's not an ashtray.  :wsh:

Sorry, I don't know. I had thought Alrose, but am always open to correction.
Cheers, Sue M. (she/her)

It's an ashtray made by Kamei of Japan. They made this design in many colors and decorations. The rim is very distinctive. The ashtrays are often sold as Murano on eBay.

Sweet.  I had no idea what it was when I bought it today.  Curiosity as much as anything was the deciding factor though lust played it's part as usual.  My first manga glass

Seen a few over the years, one today as a matter of fact with a black & white M R M label marked Mount Royal Foreign Merchandise.

Chris do you know who MRM Mount Royal are?
I just did a quick search on the board and they are mentioned on paperweights, but I couldn't find any info on them.
There was a mention of MRM meaning Mount Royal Merchandise so would they be importers maybe rather than producers perhaps?

Tried various searches and too came up with nothing except an odd apple and pear with the label nothing on the company will purchase it tomorrow if it's still there if only to dispel the Alrose myth maybe? it was only a couple of pounds in a charity shop, the label looked quite old could be anything Chinese, Italian, Czech exporters maybe Japanese if Anita has a labelled example to compare.

I looked at some paperweights and pears that have the MRM Mount Royal, Foreign label and thought they looked Chinese. I have the feeling MRM is just an import company, so it wouldn't tell us anything about the makers unless it had the country of origin on it.
