hooped steel coloured vase for id.
« on: December 16, 2011, 05:30:50 PM »
Hooped decoration plus the colour are certainly Scandinavian elements, but I don't see this in my books, and just as likely from elsewhere.     Has high quality ground/polished pontil, fire polished rim, and plenty of wear - so could be quite old.     Not optically moulded, and outside moulding is reflected equally on the inside (in reverse of course)  -  quite attractive the way the hoops decrease as they go up the vase.    Height is something like 8.78"/225mm, and remarkably free from water staining bearing in the age.     thanks for looking. :)

Hi,
I have this same vase and have just taken pictures so that I could post it.  I have found it for sale on the web identified as Whitefriars by Wilson, but could find no confirmation and am doubtful.

It's a lovely vase, hope someone out there can ID it.

Adair

Hello Adair, and welcome to the GMB by the way.       I agree with you, this has a look of quality about it - a very sharp steely colour and, in my opinion, also has some reasonable age.    Must admit I did have a quick look through Leslie Jackson's W/Fs. book, but nothing remotely like it that I could see (I don't have the bigger book).     I still think the colour looks Scandi, and the shape would not exclude it, but as for the moulding, maybe that's a different thing.         Are you saying that it's on ebay at the moment?

Hi,
Originally, I thought it had to be Scandinavian.
I have a page of listings I printed from the UK ebay site on Nov. 14th.  It is shown as "Whitefriar's strapped vase in sea green"   and the listing had 8 days to run, unfortunately.  Mine is the same color as yours, and the one on ebay seemed to be more steel than green.  I believe in the detail section, the name Wilson was mentioned as the designer.   This was the second time I had seen this vase with the same ID, but I'm  a bit disorganized, and didn't notice if it was the same lister.  Also, I know nothing at all about Whitefriar's beyond pictures, although I think I have a WF's pot belly vase which I need  to post for confirmation.

Hoping for an ID,
Adair

there are indeed W/Fs. pieces that have applied external decoration in the form of threading, ribbon trailing, tears and swags, but this piece is certainly nothing remotely to do with that.   This is a decorative feature formed by a mould, on what I might suggest is a tallish tumbler shaped vase.         I think presently we are 'strapped' for ideas, and may end up without any positive id at all -  but fingers crossed :)
