Brockwitz Carnival 'Sunflower and Diamonds', 6'' version
« on: May 03, 2013, 05:05:51 PM »
Brockwitz carnival glass vase in marigold, "Sunflower and Diamonds" pattern, 6'' / 15.5 cm high.
An accidental purchase in a charity shop (I wasn't even sure it was pre WW2 carnival glass when I bought it, as the major part of carnival I see here is Indiana glass from the 1970s).

According to Glen's great website "scarce as hen's teeth" ;D >> Link

Congratulations! The diminutive size is indeed extremely scarce. We found ours in Vienna!  :o

Michael - yes! That is simply amazing. Vienna must be THE place. Perhaps we have the two parts of what was once a pair. I got mine from the Naschmarkt, on a Saturday morning about eight years ago.

That must have been an exciting day for you, Glen!
Naschmarkt fleamarket is great, I go there every Saturday morning...

I found mine a few weeks ago in a big Viennese  charity shop, at 1,- Euro I couldn't leave it there (though I had no idea what it was then).
Funny thing is that it looks like some parts of the base ring are "missing"; but it feels smooth, so could it be a production flaw rather then a damage?

We made it to the Naschmarkt on two memorable occasions (both were during long weekends in Vienna—wonderful city!) We couldn't believe it when we found the small size Sunflower & Diamond vase. Your purchase was amazing. What a lucky find!

It's interesting what you say about the base. It has a domed base, with the outer section being ground. I've taken a quick pic of it for you. (edited to add: yours looks exactly right in your photo above).

Thanks for taking the time to take a pic, Glen!
Unfortunately mine is on "display" at work, so no chance to take a pic before next week; but the base looks like yours, with just several flaws similar to the one close to the camera in yours, just a lot bigger (even makes the vase wobble a little); but as there are no sharp edges, and not the slightest damage visible above the base, I assumed that it was probably rather a production issue than a chip.

BTW, I will need your help again, as I aquired a nice carnival lidded jar today, but just cannot find the pattern anywhere.
Will take pics as soon as I have the time!
edit: just had a stroll through your wonderful website, and found it: Hortensja Poland! "Sultan" pattern.

After lookig at hundreds of patterns of vintage and recent carnival glass, I almost gave up; then I looked through the "collectors' facts" chapter on your site -- and there it was :) >> Link

And yes, it is a beautiful piece; as my example looks brand new, I first thought it could be contemporary carnival...

So thanks again, Glen, for sharing so generously your knowledge and discoveries!
