A Sowerby flint glass sugar basin bearing the lozenge for 19 December 1877 – Parcel 1 and the Sowerby peacock trademark.

(Permission for the re-use of these images on the GMB granted by gaveldot).

The sugar basin is Sowerby pattern 1276, and it appears on page 49 of their pattern book XI (1885) with their generic lozenge alongside it indicating that is from a registered design.

The design registration parcel contained 4 design registrations, RDs 317277 to 317280. RD 317277 is a candlestick (Sowerby pattern 1283). Cottle and Thompson describe RDs 317279 and 317280 as ‘butter dishes’, so that leaves RD 317278 (which Cottle and Thompson describe as a ‘sugar basin’) as the most likely candidate for this sugar.

If Paul has the design representations for this registration parcel, I would be most grateful if he could confirm that RD 317278 is, in fact, correct for this pattern 1276 sugar basin.

Fred.

the shape does appear to match 317278 as per the attached, although some of these Sowerby blue pencil drawings are now of less than ideal quality.             Don't know if you can see, but it does say sugar basin underneath the drawing.
