Topic: Thomas Webb glass? help please.

Does anyone know if this is a Thomas webb glass, if not who made it and a rough date please, i have three, one has a broken pontil, one a flamed pontil and the last an indented base neither polished or flamed. I think their wax etched and they are 5 1/4 inches in height 3 3/8ths across the rim and base.

These are machine etched I think, like those described as 'Pall Mall'. Sorry no idea who and a bit clueless as to when.

Every man and his dog made etched glasses like this, and there were numerous designs, so you are unlikely to find who made them. I'm not even sure the etches were proprietary either.

Ok thanks for that, there is a similar example under Thomas webb on the replacements web site, and two similar patterns these seem too well made to be mass produced.

A lot of Thomas Webb was "mass" produced but not on a modern scale, as it was at most manufacturers. The number of pieces each chair had to produce a day was high. These glasses were hand-blown and then machine etched. I have a report on handblown domestic glassware from 1947 and it states that in 1935 the total production of handblown stemware in the UK was valued at £91,000. The fancy stuff we tend to associate with these factories didn't make the profits but it did keep public interest, as do limited editions today.
