A very useful facility.

Absolutely, it has helped me turn my gibberish into gobbledegook many a time. :D

Keith, to quote part of a post hit the relevant Insert Quote button, then delete any parts of the quote you do not want. Remember to leave the codes alone that start and finish the block of text - inside the [...] (square bracket thingies).

This is how I quoted just a bit of Paul's previous post.

I find copy and paste using just my mouse and one of those "right-clicks" works every time.  ;)
I just have to try to remember to put the bits I'm quoting in inverted commas afterwards.

Quoting text ... there are two ways to post text as a "stated quote" ...

1. Use the "Quote" link at the top of any post, then as John has said, edit the text as required - taking care to only change the parts between the square brackets for [ quote ..... ] and [ /quote ]. And for tidiness, also make sure any trailing space before the [ /quote ] is also deleted.

2. Copy just the required text from any post. Then use the regular Reply button followed by a paste of the copied text. After that, highlight all of the pasted text and click on the "Insert Quote" button (6th "button" from left on the lower line of  "buttons" above the emoticons).

(For 2. you can use the "Insert Quote" first and then paste the copied text between the square bracket bits ... thus avoiding the need to highlight all of the pasted text.)

I was afraid my thread was going to be removed because my vases aren't glass, though glass-related.  I'm happy that's it's taken an unexpected educational turn.  :)

Thank you Kevin and everyone for your help, humour and comments. Honestly appreciated.
