Hoffman Uranium Glass Salt
« on: December 03, 2019, 12:48:02 PM »
Not an animal figurine and also already identified but a nice piece with a horse head intaglio. It's a salt dish by Hoffman, number 1009/2162/6.5cm. found in their 1939 catalogue but probably from the 1920's/30's. Hoffman worked in Paris but his glass was made in Bohemia/Czechoslovakia. Thanks to the opensalts.us site for this information.

I'm suprised it doesn't have the butterfly mark. I doubt that it's much earlier than 1939. It certainly doesn't appear in the 1933/4 catalogue and it is a much higher number than any of the items in that catalogue. It could also be an ash tray of course...

Thanks Lustrousstone, I think it probably hasn't got a mark because it's only about 2 1/2" x 2" and it's also too small for an ashtray. I was guessing it was earlier being as it's uranium glass. It is exactly the same as the one in the 1939 catalogue which by that time was Hoffman-Schlevogt so perhaps they didn't use the butterfly mark then.

Having taken another look I can just see the butterfly mark on pieces in the 1927 catalogue but can't see it on any in the 1939 catalogue.

Even the tiniest things had butterfly marks http://lustrousstone.co.uk/cpg/displayimage.php?pid=2664 This is about the same size. The later date wouldn't rule out uranium
