Has the base on this Monart glass vase been ground
« on: February 09, 2022, 08:47:55 PM »
White mottled Monart glass vase , my only doubt is the base which is smooth. Has it been ground.
The vase is 6.5" tall , the base measures 3 1/8"
Weight 1062gm

Thanks Roy

How thick is the glass? A ground/polished flat base with no applied button can be found on some pieces which turn out to be very finely blown, simply because it would not have been possible to put a blob of hot glass onto something so thin without ruining it.
I'm afraid I can't tell from your pic what the texture is, whether roughly ground, satinated or polished.
But it sounds like quite a heavy little thing.  ???

Thanks Sue.

I try one more pic tonight if no good will try tomorrow. I would say the base is about 5mm thick.

Thanks Roy

That would be thick enough for a button to have been applied. I am having little wonders about a.n. other "Scottish glassmaker" who made this style; or Chic Young. The colour is very neat and tight around the top. But I do not have the advantage of being able to hold it and see it in the light and I could be way off.  ::)

Thanks Sue

I think its good for Monart , but most likely had a chip ground out. At the end of the day it only cost £4.50 so no great loss.

Thanks again Roy

Roy can you show the vase against a white background at all?  It's nice to see the actual colours - are the speckles black or purple?
It looks like this bowl

And is the general colour white or pale blue?  :)
If it is pale blue, could it be the queen mothery stuff?

I have tried my best with these pictures. I would say white in general.

Thanks Roy

That last one has confirmned that it is white, and that the base is fully polished.
Thanks, Roy.  :)
